British troops have helped the Afghan National Army conduct an operation in Taliban-controlled territory north of Lashkar Gah which has inflicted heavy losses on the insurgents.
Operation ATTAL lasted from 10-19 January 2009 and culminated in the establishment of a new police checkpoint, which will help improve security in the area, as well as the seizure of insurgent weapons, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and other equipment.
The operation saw the Afghan National Army (ANA) build on their significant contribution to Operation SOND CHARA in December 2008 and involved elements of their 1st and 3rd Brigades of 205 Hero Corps, commanded by General Mohaiyodin Ghori.
The total force of around 700 personnel included support from the British Operational Mentor and Liaison Team (OMLT) attached to the ANA units comprising of members of 1st Battalion The Rifles and 24 Commando Engineer Regiment, who in turn were supported by Fire Support Teams from 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery.
Troops from a Canadian OMLT also supported the operation as well as Danish personnel from 1st Battalion Jutland Dragoons Regiment.
